Breast reconstruction is a procedure in which a number of advanced surgical techniques are used to reconstruct the breast mound after the loss of a breast due to cancer or another life-threatening disease. The Breast Reconstruction Procedure

Dr. Yenikomshian performs breast reconstruction surgery at an accredited surgical center in the San Jose area. Because Dr. Yenikomshian tailors the breast reconstruction procedure to each individual patient, the details of the surgery vary from woman to woman. There are two main techniques, however, that the doctor may choose to employ, depending on a patient's unique case:

Implant-based Breast Reconstruction

This method of breast reconstruction involves the use of breast implants to restore the appearance of full breasts. First, Dr. Yenikomshian must create a space for the implants. He does this by placing a balloon expander under the skin and chest muscle. Over time, this tissue expander will be inflated so as to gradually make room for the insertion of the breast implant.

Tram Flap Breast Reconstruction

For patients who don't want breast implants, the tram flap method may be a viable alternative method of breast reconstruction. With this technique, the patient's own tissue is taken from the abdomen and used to form a natural-looking breast mound. Women who have excess fat and loose skin in the abdominal area may be suitable candidates for this procedure.
