What is scar revision?

Scar revision is a broad term used to describe several techniques that can reduce the prominence of scars resulting from accidents or past surgeries. Although these techniques can significantly help to improve the appearance of scars, nothing can erase them completely.

At the Center for Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Yenikomshian carefully examines a patient's scar to determine the best course of treatment. The methods of scar revision that are used depend on the size of the scar and its position, the age and gender of the patient, and the extent to which the patient wishes to conceal the scar. Taking into account all of these criteria, Dr. Yenikomshian may recommend one or more of the following treatments:

Dermabrasion

Using a special dermabrasion tool, Dr. Yenikomshian carefully removes the top layer of skin, making the scar appear lighter and smoother.

Steroid Injections

Heavy scars, known as keloids, can often be improved through the use of steroid injections. An enzyme contained in the steroid breaks down collagen to lessen the thickness and redness of the scar.

Skin Grafts

Transferring a small amount of skin from a discrete area of the body to the site of the scar may help to camouflage scar tissue.

Surgical Scar Revision

In some cases, the position of a scar can be surgically adjusted in order to relocate it to a more inconspicuous location, such as a natural crease in the skin.
