Fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne, rosacea, scars, uneven texture, and other skin flaws can sabotage even a person’s best efforts to achieve a clear, radiant complexion. In the past, makeup was the only reliable way to camouflage blemished skin. With the abundance of new technologies and techniques, however, it is finally possible for anyone to put his or her best face forward. Treatments such as elōs®, dermabrasion, and IPL® Photofacial™ at the San Jose-based plastic surgery practice of Dr. A.M. Yenikomshian can help patients achieve a complexion that glows with health and youthful beauty. Although each of these procedures is effective when used by itself, many patients choose to combine these skin-enhancing treatments with face lift surgery, eyelid surgery, or BOTOX® injections for a more dramatic makeover.
IPL® Photofacial™ is an advanced, non-invasive treatment that can benefit skin prone to hyperpigmentation, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, large pores, acne, and rosacea. Using intense pulses of light, an IPL® Photofacial™ penetrates the skin to promote increased collagen production and cause tiny blood vessels beneath the epidermis to contract. These actions help to renew the elasticity of the skin and reduce redness.
During an IPL® Photofacial™ at our San Jose cosmetic surgery practice, Dr. Yenikomshian uses a special handpiece to deliver precise doses of light to damaged skin of the face, neck, chest, or hands. The number of treatments it takes to achieve noticeable improvement depends on the extent of the damage. Typically, it takes four treatments to attain one's desired results.
Because IPL® Photofacial™ is non-ablative (no skin is removed during the treatment), there is little to no downtime involved in the procedure. Although the procedure is gentle, people with darker skin may notice changes in skin pigmentation after IPL® Photofacial™. Pregnant women and people taking certain medications, such as Accutane®, should postpone treatment with IPL® Photofacial™. Although IPL® Photofacial™ can treat a wide range of skin problems, it cannot address sagging facial skin or drooping eyelids. These cosmetic concerns can be addressed with a face lift or eyelid surgery. At the Center for Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Yenikomshian conducts a comprehensive evaluation before treatment to determine a patient's candidacy.
Dermabrasion is an advanced technique that is used to refinish the skin. Especially helpful for individuals who are concerned about scars, including those that have resulted from an accident, surgery, or severe acne, dermabrasion restores the appearance of smoother, more evenly toned skin. Although dermabrasion may be appropriate for people of all ages, it may not be suitable for individuals with darker skin. The procedure may alter the color of the skin, and these changes may be more noticeable in people with darker skin tones.
During the dermabrasion procedure at our practice in San Jose, Dr. Yenikomshian carefully removes the outer layer of skin using an abrasive surgical device. Dermabrasion can target a small area of the skin or a larger region – for instance, the entire face. The duration of the procedure varies according to the size of the area to be treated and the extent of the damage to be corrected.
Dr. Yenikomshian gives each patient a set of instructions to follow after undergoing dermabrasion. It is very important to gently care for the skin and to avoid the sun. Exposure to the sun may cause the skin to permanently darken or become blotchy. Depending on the condition of the skin prior to treatment, it is not uncommon for more than one dermabrasion treatment to be recommended in order to achieve optimal improvement.
elōs® is a revolutionary technology that combines the rejuvenating powers of bi-polar radio frequency (RF) and optical energy. Working together, these dual energies can greatly enhance the skin. Safely and effectively, RF and optical energy penetrate the deeper layers of the skin to promote collagen and elastin production and to diminish fine lines, brown spots, blood vessels, and other blemishes.
Like IPL® Photofacial™, also offered at our San Jose practice, elōs® is a non-surgical, non-abrasive procedure. During the elōs® treatment, which can be performed in as little as 30 minutes, patients may experience a pricking or snapping sensation. For the vast majority of Dr. Yenikomshian's patients, the treatment is easily tolerated.
Since there is little to no downtime associated with elōs®, many patients find that they are able to return to their daily routine immediately after the procedure. Depending on a patient's skin condition, five to eight treatments may be recommended in order to achieve optimal results.
